Thursday, September 12

Today we practiced representing large numbers in a variety of ways (in standard form, written form, expanded form, on a place value chart, with money, and with base ten blocks) by rolling random numbers with dice. We finished sharing our All About Me bags, and students discovered even more connections with one another! Our novel read aloud, The 39 Clues: Maze of Bones, continues to be full of intrigue and excitement, and the section we read today literally ended with a bang! In science we brainstormed living and non-living things, looking for commonalities and ultimately coming up with defining characteristics for these categories, and in social studies we continued to work on our maps of Canada.

Two notices are coming home today: a family count notice about Fun Lunch, and a field trip form for our first exciting field trip to the wetland at Heritage Park! As our field trip is only a week away, please complete and return these forms ASAP! A reminder that all coloured forms from the beginning of the year package also need to be returned by tomorrow if you haven't already done so.

Some students did not yet complete the assignments that were due today: the All About Me page and the Five Questions (available on the blog post from Tuesday). If your child has either of these overdue, please support them in finishing this work at home. Other upcoming due dates are All About Me in Equations due Monday, September 16, and the Wetland pre-assessment questions due Wednesday, September 18. Students will continue to have daily unfinished work time, but many of them should also be bringing these assignments home to complete for homework as the due dates approach.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at Meet the Teacher Night tonight! As always, there will be two identical presentations at 6:30 or 7:00 pm for you to choose between that will highlight information about our classroom and school year. If you are unable to attend, I will be posting the PowerPoint from my presentation on the blog tomorrow for you to peruse. It looks like there will be wonderful weather for the free Welcome Back BBQ on the compound at 5:30 tonight!
