Today in Math we went over our rounding practice sheet and started looking at strategies for estimating sums, including front-end rounding and compatible numbers. In French we practiced our numbers from 1-100 as well as working with the mathematical concept of multiples to play the game Zoot.
In Social Studies we continued our exploration of identity by reflecting on and representing elements of our own identities on outlines of our hands, in a mix of writing and drawing. Students considered physical and personality traits, hobbies and activities, cultural backgrounds, groups to which they belong, and things that they love. We got a good start on these identity hands, and will finish them up during UFW blocks in the next little while.

Identity Hands in progress |
In Language Arts, we continued to learn more about the families and backstories of the characters in
because of mr. terupt as well as beginning to explore the concept of strong verbs. Strong verbs help us to make our writing more specific and interesting by creating a more vivid image in our readers' minds. We read a picture book together and worked to identify the strong verbs in it, compiling a list that we can later use as a reference for our own writing. We also practiced acting out different strong verbs, to help us identify precisely what each verbs conveys.

We are trying to avoid using these "jail words" |

We've begun brainstorming strong verbs to use instead |

The book Mountain Dance by Thomas Locker gave us a great start to our Strong Verbs list, plus we loved the beautiful illustrations! |
