Monday, December 2

Today we had another solid period of QR/UFW, during which students had the opportunity to catch up on unfinished or overdue work or read silently. As report card time approaches, it becomes increasingly important for students to have all work fully completed! This may mean taking assignments home to complete for homework.

In Math, Mr. Risdon reviewed the pattern check-in we worked on last week and gave students the opportunity to copy down the correct answers. Then they paired up with a partner to complete a second similar check-in together, using their first one to help them. (More time will be provided to complete this tomorrow.) These check-ins will be helpful in preparing for our Pattern unit test, which will be this Thursday. Students are also encouraged to review their pattern work from throughout the unit in preparation for this test.

In Science, students shared about the methods that they used to separate their mixtures of solids last week as well as conclusions that they drew from this experiment. Then they added their recent learning to their mind maps. Finally, Mr. Risdon performed a really neat "rainbow in a cup" demonstration that layered five different liquids on top of one another. These liquids were (from bottom to top): corn syrup, dish soap, water (with blue food colouring), olive oil, and rubbing alcohol (with red food colouring). Students wrote/drew in their science journals to explain why they thought so many distinct layers formed rather than the liquids mixing together.

In the afternoon, our class worked with the composer from Calgary Opera to begin putting the words of our school opera to music. We will meet with Darin (the composer) again next Thursday, December 12.

Then, in Language Arts, we continued reading The Boundless together. We encountered real historical figures Sam Steele and Sandford Fleming in the section we read today.

Finally, we had our first inline skating time, which the students greatly enjoyed! Our remaining two times will be tomorrow and Wednesday, so don't forget your helmets if you have them!

As we move into December and the holiday season, students are encouraged to remember those who are in need and to focus on ways that they can show kindness and generosity. Our monthly quote for December is a reminder of this:

With this in mind, Hawkwood School is beginning a fundraiser for the Calgary Food Bank, and donations of money and/or non-perishable food items will be collected between now and winter break. Even small donations can make a huge difference in the lives of Calgary families in need this holiday season. Please consider donating to this worthy cause if you are able to! There will be a jug in the office for money that is donated and boxes in the Hawk's Nest for food.

Below you can also find a kindness calendar for the month of December that suggests daily ways to spread kindness and joy. (From https://www.actionforhappiness.org/) Many of these suggestions require no money and little effort, but would be a fantastic way to bring some cheer to someone's day! Perhaps some of these could even be done together as a family!
