Welcome back to school and to the year 2020! I hope that you all had wonderful breaks full of quality time with family and friends. I enjoyed hearing about some of the adventures students had over winter break when they shared during our Circle time today. We are also celebrating this fresh start by trying out a new seating plan, as students are not yet all able to responsibly and respectfully choose their own seats. We may try more flexible seating again later in the school year, but for now assigned seats seem to be most useful for our current classroom environment.
In Math today, we played another round of SNAKE, a game we learned before the break. This game helps us practice basic multiplication facts and addition, as well as reinforcing learning from our probability unit. Students are strongly encouraged to continue practicing basic multiplication and division facts at home (up to 10 x 10).
In French we reviewed our clothing and colour vocabulary, and in Language Arts we started discussing significant personal events from the past decade, along with hopes, dreams, and goals for the upcoming two decades. This brainstorming will help us as we move on to creating "decade writing" brochures in the coming days. We also spent time quiet reading and working on unfinished work. A large portion of the class has not yet completed their Cordillera region brochures, which were due before the break. Please check in with your child about whether they have finished theirs; if not, this overdue work needs to be completed for homework as soon as possible. We also had our last class time to work on our Arctic region posters for Social Studies. These posters will now be Unfinished Work as we move on to a new region of Canada in Social Studies tomorrow.
A reminder that there are some very cold days forecast for the next while in Calgary. While students will be staying inside if the weather is -20 or below, it is still important that everyone is dressing appropriately for the weather! It is hard to predict for sure when students will be inside, and we want to make sure that everyone is staying warm!
