Wednesday, February 19

Today we began Math with number sentences, as usual, equalling 19. Some students explored incorporating the two-digit by two-digit multiplication that we've been working with by multiplying 19 by another two-digit number (for example 19 x 23 = 437), and then using the related division fact as a number sentence (437 / 23 = 19). This allowed students to write more complex division sentences than their division skills might currently allow. After number sentences, students had a chance to look over the multiplication check-ins that they wrote last week. Almost all students now appear to have a two-digit by two-digit multiplication strategy that works for them! The check-in was a good reminder for some of them to practice their basic facts, to read questions carefully, and to check their work over thoroughly. We finished up Math by using Prodigy to continue practicing our multiplication skills.

We had a lengthy Circle time today as students had lots of exciting stories to share from their long weekends! It was wonderful to hear all of the adventures that they had gotten up to! Then, in Language Arts, we did some preparatory work for Pink Shirt Day (Wednesday, February 26) and the assembly leading up to it (Friday, February 21). Our class was responsible for creating a puzzle piece that will become part of a larger flag composed of pieces from each class at Friday's assembly. Students decided to include a quote about kindness on our piece as well as relevant illustrations. After deciding on a lovely quote, student volunteers were commissioned to create the puzzle piece, which turned out so well! Students also spent time writing about how we can show kindness rather than bullying, and one student from our class will get to read their written response out loud at the assembly on Friday!

We met again with the opera composer, Mr. Darin, who shared with us some of the music that he has put together for our school opera. Then we finished up the day with our final Social Studies class time to work on our fur trade diary entries. This writing will now be Unfinished Work.

Students who are going to write the CESMC math contest will need to let me know by Monday, February 24. This contest is run through Mount Royal University each year for grades 4, 5, and 6 students throughout the city and in the surrounding area. The contest is written here at the school on Wednesday, April 22, supervised by myself and other teachers, and is marked by the contest organizers at MRU. It is 50 minutes long and consists of 20 multiple choice questions ranging from easy to difficult. Interested students are encouraged to take a look at past contests to get a sense of the types of questions they might encounter. These contest questions are intended to be difficult and do go beyond the grade level curriculum. I will be running lunchtime sessions closer to the contest to help students learn some of these new concepts, such as exponents, order of operations, operations with fractions and decimals, etc. All students who participate get certificates after the contest is marked, and students scoring in the top 25% of participants get a certificate of distinction.

A reminder that tomorrow is our next Winsport ski/snowboard day! Students are encouraged to dress in layers, as it is supposed to get quite warm by the afternoon. Winsport's policy is that students are allowed to take their jackets off on the hill only if they are wearing a long-sleeved shirt. Please also ensure that students are wearing snowpants, as this is another Winsport requirement.
