Friday, March 13
We began the day with independent reading time, while the Rocky Mountain Readers went to the Learning Commons to vote on the books they had read. Then we moved into Circle time, which gave space for a number of students to share their concerns about COVID-19 and the public response to it. Students were very reassuring and encouraging to one another, and I've suggested that they continue this conversation at home with a trusted adult if needed. I am also here if students need to talk. As far as the continued impact of COVID-19 on the school, so far the decision has been made to keep CBE schools open but cancel any events that involve people from outside the school, including parents, which is why our Student-Led Conferences and Book Fair have been canceled/postponed. The CBE has released a page of Frequently Asked Questions that might be helpful in answering some of the questions that you have, and we will continue to keep parents updated if any changes occur. As of now, however, school will continue as usual on Monday.
In Science, students finished up their work researching and creating a poster about a piece of technology that uses electromagnets. This work, which they did with a partner, will be shared on Monday afternoon.
In Math, we spent some time talking about Pi Day, which is tomorrow! We discussed what pi actually is, listened to the story of Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi, read through examples of pi poems that can help one memorize some of the digits of pi, and listened to the epically catchy Pi Song. Hopefully some of you will get a chance to celebrate this fun day tomorrow! (It is also Albert Einstein's birthday!)
We continued the Math fun in our community math block by creating zentangles, which connect to the mathematical concepts of patterns, fractions, ratios, 2D shapes and 3D objects, and spatial awareness.
Thank-you for your continued support in our school-wide Read-A-Thon! Students still have this weekend to get some more reading time in, and then tracking sheets and pledges can be brought in on Monday and Tuesday. Our class has also brought in a total of 134 used book donations, which is amazing!! Thank-you again!
