Today in Math, after our number sentences, we began working on estimating quotients (finding an approximate answer to a division problem). This is a useful skill both for answering word problems that can be answered with about how many, as well as checking whether our answer to a division problem is reasonable. It is important to always be checking if our answers are reasonable. We explored using front-end rounding as well as compatible numbers. It is important for students to choose numbers that are close, but that they can easily work with mentally. That means thinking about our basic division facts, and ensuring that the numbers will divide evenly with no remainder.
In Social Studies we wrote a reflection on the field trip we took yesterday to the Glenbow Museum. Students structured this response into one or more paragraphs and made sure to highlight their key experiences and learning from the trip.
In French, following calendrier, we finished up working through this video about describing animals with different adjectives. Then we began reading/listening to/translating Ours brun, dis moi, which is the French version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Students will soon be creating their own versions of this book.
In Language Arts, students used the following prompt for their warm-up writing: "I fell asleep while reading. When I woke up, I was in the book." Then Mr. Risdon led a lesson about writing dialogue. He highlighted using quotation marks, choosing a more interesting verb than "said," and beginning a new paragraph with each new speaker. We finished up the class with the final three groups sharing their food paragraphs.
We began the afternoon with Grade 2 Buddies, working with our buddies to create a St. Patrick's Day themed sun catcher. Most groups got a good start on their craft, and we will continue this work next week.
We also spent time this afternoon reading chapter two of The Incredible Journey and working on our research about a technology that uses electromagnets and then creating a poster to share this information.
