Thursday, March 5
We began our day with a division check-in. Most students now seem to have a division strategy that is working for them, but for those who don't, this would be a good thing to work on at home (that we will also spend some more time on at school). Reading and understanding word problems also continues to be an area that students will practice and be supported in.
In French, after our usual calendar time, we continued our work with describing animals, working through the sentences and video from this website.
In Language Arts students warmed up by writing a paragraph beginning with "Today I learned I could fly." Then they examined the paragraphs that they had brought in, identifying the topic sentence and conclusion, then summarizing the main points of the paragraph. They swapped texts with another student and did this again, repeating for as many paragraphs as they could fit in before the end of the period.
In our afternoon Language Arts block, we began as usual with quiet reading/unfinished work. Then we discussed our upcoming second Snack & Chat. Students are once again asked to select a book they have fully read and prepare a short, informal talk about the text. The linked document has more information on what specifically should be included in their presentation. Our second Snack & Chat will be on Thursday, March 19. Students are encouraged to write down what they would like to share, and to ensure that they have a copy of the book with them with a section bookmarked to read out loud. Students are welcome to sign their book out of the learning commons if they do not own a copy. As part of this Snack & Chat introduction, Ms. Williamson and I each did our own short presentation about a book that we have enjoyed. Some students expressed interest in reading these books, so here are the titles and authors:
Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
In Science we continued our work with electromagnets by providing some structured research time on the topic using computers. There were a series of four questions that students worked in small groups to answer.
A reminder that we would like all field trip forms for the Glenbow Museum trip returned this week. I'm still missing a few, so please try to get these filled out and handed in for tomorrow! Thank-you!
Tomorrow will be our next Positive Choices reward. Students voted for some free iPad time. As always, they are also welcome to wear pjs and bring a blanket/stuffed animal if they would like.
