Tuesday, March 10

I'm so impressed with the way that students continue to push themselves by exploring new concepts in number sentences, including many things well beyond a grade five level! Today I saw operations with fractions, negative numbers, decimals, square roots, exponents, factorials, and more complex multiplication and division calculations.

We also continued working on the division word problems from yesterday, including going over the first one together.

In Language Arts we finished reading the first chapter of The Incredible Journey together and shared our descriptive paragraphs about food. We also wrote paragraphs that began with: "I was heading back to the place I thought I'd never see again." Students had some very creative ideas inspired by this beginning!

In Social Studies we continued working on our comic strips about the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands region of Canada.

We ended the day with Science, working first on research about electromagnets in general and then focusing in on a specific piece of technology that uses electromagnets. Students worked with a partner to answer the questions below:

Remember, if you did not finish the first sheet of Electromagnet Research, this is now homework due Thursday.

A reminder that tomorrow is our field trip to the Glenbow Museum in connection to our Social Studies work around Canada's First Nations. We will not be bringing backpacks on this trip, so please ensure that you have your lunch packed in a way that is easily transportable. Thank-you to the parents who have volunteered to come on this trip with us! We are grateful to have your help! We will be departing the school shortly after the morning bell, so please arrive by 9:10.
