We had such a great field trip to the Glenbow Museum today! We began with a tour of the museum, highlighting a cool art exhibit (about which the students had some really thoughtful and unique ideas and connections), part of the Mavericks exhibit that included Captain Freddie McCall and his daring emergency plane landing on top of a carousel at the Stampede, and the Warriors exhibit.

The second half of the day included our program about the First Nations of Canada, and allowed students to consider the similarities and differences between First Nations groups and their ways of life in four different regions of the country: North, East, South, and West. The program highlighted how the different resources, climates, landforms, and locations impacted the ways in which groups in the region lived and met their basic needs.

After collecting information about the food, clothing, transportation, tools/weapons, materials, and designs of each region, students had an opportunity to handle and make inferences about a couple of different artifacts. These inferences (about the use of the item, the materials from which it was made, and the region it came from) needed to be based on the evidence collected in our exploration of the regions.

Before and after our afternoon program, groups also had an opportunity to explore other exhibits in the museum.

It was a great day overall, and I hope that students have taken away a lot of new information and experiences! Thank-you once again to the parent volunteers who made this trip possible, and to all of the students who were on their best behaviour at the museum today! We are looking forward to tying this new learning back into our Social Studies work about Canada!
