Wednesday, March 4

Today in Health class we spent some time talking about the Coronavirus, as students have clearly been grappling with the vast array of information and misinformation that they've been bombarded with recently. We spent time clearing up some myths and reinforcing the actual facts. We also read through this comic aimed at kids and watched a BrainPop video on the subject. The main takeaway for students was that chances of getting the virus here in Alberta remain extremely low, and that the best way to take care of themselves remains the same as always: wash your hands well, get enough sleep, eat a balanced and healthy diet, get exercise, and stay home/see a doctor if you feel unwell. We know that students are still experiencing some anxiety and confusion on this topic, so we've encouraged them to talk further with a trusted adult if they would like. The CBE has also distributed some information on the virus today that might be helpful.

In Math, students continued working on division word problems. The answers to these problems can be found below; students are encouraged to check over their own work at home. A summary of the division strategies that we've covered in class can also be found below. Students are encouraged to review this information and their work in preparation for our division check-in, which is tomorrow. The check-in will cover three digit by one digit division, with and without remainders, including word problems.

In Language Arts we continued our work with paragraph writing. Each student wrote a paragraph beginning with the sentence "The C-train suddenly stopped inside the tunnel." They were encouraged to be descriptive in their writing and to incorporate at least three senses.

Mr. Risdon has given a one day extension for students to bring in the paragraph example that was originally due today. Students are asked to find and bring in an example of a paragraph that includes a topic sentence and supporting details for tomorrow. This could be in a physical book, or it could be printed off of an online piece. Thank-you for supporting your child in this task!

In Social Studies we had our final class time to gather jot notes about the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands region of Canada. As always, students were asked to focus on interesting and important information about what makes this region unique.

In Science, we explored electromagnets, creating them by coiling a wire around a nail and attaching it to a battery. The current flowing through the coil created an electromagnet that could pick up one (or more!) paper clip(s). Students had to be careful, however, as this circuit did not have a load, and was therefore a short circuit, which heated up and could drain the battery quickly.

"Spring into Reading" read-a-thon information is coming home today. This important fundraiser will both raise money for our school as well as encouraging literacy at home. Beginning this Saturday, students are asked to track the amount of time they read outside of school, and to collect pledges from friends and family. We are also competing as a class to collect the most book donations for the upcoming used book sale, so please take a look around at home for books that you no longer need or use! Students will also need to have a book with them at all times during the next school week, as there will be periodic whole school DEAR times throughout. Finally, there will be a "Dress up as your favourite character" themed dress up day next Friday, March 13. Thank-you for your support in this!
